Slots can be both exciting and confusing at first. The game in itself is quite simple to play: you spin the reels and hope for the best of results. Online slots found on NZ Casino will most often be easy to play but won’t offer a lot of explanation of how they work or what possibilities there are within the games. That’s where we come in! Do not be intimidated by any slot – they aren’t that complicated at all and we promise to give you explanations that are easy to grasp. One of the most important game mechanics in slots is paylines, which we talk about in this article.
The winning line
In the simplest of terms, a payline (also called a winline or betline) is a line based on which wins will be awarded. Slots will have multiple paylines and if the winning symbols land in the sequence of the payline, the value of these symbols will be paid out to the player.
Any slot will have a fixed amount of paylines, it could be as little as 1 payline or go way over 100 paylines, i.e., 1 way to win or over 100 ways to win. The wins in that game will only be awarded if matching symbols cover one of the valid paylines.
A payline could take many shapes: it could be a straight line from left to right, or a diagonal line across the reels, or a zig-zagging line that starts at one side of the reels and ends on the other.
Know which lines you’re betting on!
It is common for slots to have varying amounts of active paylines depending on the size of your bet. Let’s say you’re playing a slot with 25 paylines. As you increase and decrease the bet you will see the number of paylines change. For example, a £0.5 bet will activate 10 paylines, a £1 bet will activate 20 paylines, and a bet of £2 could activate the full 25 paylines.
So it is very important to choose a bet that satisfies you in terms of the number of active paylines. There’s nothing worse than landing a huge winning combination only to find out it is not valid with any of the active paylines!
The more paylines – the better the game?
When thinking logically, you could say that the more paylines the slot has, the more possible winning combinations there are, and therefore the bigger the chance of winning right?
This is true on its own, but there are other factors impacting your chance of winning. Some slots might have a lot of paylines, such as “all ways to win” which features 243 active paylines. Now, this is a great sign of a decent slot, but watch out for other factors which could be lowered to compensate for a lot of paylines. A common “catch” for a slot with a lot of paylines is a low RTP (return-to-player) or a decreased hit-rate (the likelihood of landing a win).
A payline is your ticket to winning, the more you have, the higher the chance that you will celebrate. When you find a game that you like, read the reviews to see what other players have to say about it. Keep gambling affordable and fun!
