Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G are two latest chipsets from the Chinese firm Huawei. Both new SoCs brings some hefty features one would expect from a 2019 flagship device. The company emphasizes more on artificial intelligence compared to any other features. There is no doubt AI is the new future of tech industry, therefore, the company is working towards to give some hard time to its competition.
Lately, the company introduced Kirin 810, which is one of the best mid-range chipsets. It has some unique features, which competitors lack entirely like 7nm manufacturing node and dedicated NPU. I know it is unfair to compare a mid-range chipset with the flagship series, but some of you might be surely curious to know how it stands against Kirin 990 and Kirin 990 5G. Hardware and Performance
Starting with Kirin 810, it comes with octa-core CPU divided into two clusters. Two powerful cores clock speed is 2.27GHz, while, the other six are pointed @1.88GHz. The Kirin 990 on the other hands packs tri-cluster octa-core CPU with two Cortex-A76 cores @2.86GHz, other two Cortex-A76 cores @2.09GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores @1.86GHz. Finally, the Kirin 990 5G has the same concept, but a slightly faster speed. The tri-cluster CPU on 990 5G uses 2 x Cortex-A76 cores @2.86GHz, 2x Cortex-A76 cores @2.36GHz and 4x Cortex-A55 cores @1.95GHz.
Nobody should have any doubt that Kirin 990 5G holding a more powerful control processing unit, means it is capable of performing high-end tasks more smoothly. Apart from that, the 5G is manufactured on highly power-efficient TSMS’s 7nm+ EUV note. In comparison, Kirin 990 and 810 both have normal 7nm processing. Here too, 5G chip seems to have better performer than the other two.
Moving to the GPU, both Kirin 990 and 990 5G are using the 16-core Mali-G76 MP16 GPU to handle the graphics-intensive task. The Kirin 810 has Mali-G52 MP6, which is a quad-core GPU. No doubt, Mali-G76 MP16 is the latest and way more powerful compared to Mali-G52 MP6. You can easily notice the difference while playing high-end, because, GPU plays the main role. Further, all three are capable of supporting the latest LPDDR4X RAM. For storage, new SoCs include UFS 3.0 / eMMC 5.1, while, the Kirin 810 restricted to slightly older UFS 2.1 flash storage.
The Kirin 990 5G has three-cores into 2 Big + 1 Tiny core Da Vinci dedicated NPU. The bigger cores are available for demanding high power tasks, and, a tiny power efficiently core handles the small AI tasks. It can render real-time videos based on the new Real-Time Multi-Instance Segmentation.
The Kirin 990 also has similar NPU but only two (1 Big + 1 Tiny) cores available. Essential, not as powerful as the 5G chip is holding, still, performance isn’t compromised according to the company. Finally, the Kirin 810 also offers the dual-core dedicated Da Vinci NPU, which is a great thing for the mid-segment chip. It delivers the improved gaming experience with system-level AI FM scheduling technology, GPU underlying driver upgrades, GPU load optimization, and HD game effects optimization.
Camera, connectivity and More
The Kirin 810 supports up to Single 48MP or Dual 40 MP+ 24 MP on both front and rear sides. The company didn’t yet provide the camera specs for the Kirin 990 series, but it should be definitely better than the Kirin 810. In addition, ISP 5.0 on the Kirin 990 series some great optimization and faster image processing.
The display support offered by the Kirin 810 is up to 1440 x 3360 pixels QHD+, which should be more than sufficient for a mid-range device. The Kirin 990 again didn’t specify the display specs, but we expect it should at least capable of running up to 2160 x 3840 pixels UHD display. The both Kirin 990 SoCs can shoot up to 8k video, while, the Kirin 810 only records 4K UHD video.
For connectivity, The Kirin 990 5G is the industry’s first chipset to arrive with integrated 5G modem. Why it matters actually? because now it takes less space means more power efficiency. All the parts are now at the single logic board. The standard Kirin 990 and Kirin 810 doesn’t support the 5G and come with an integrated 4G modem.
Comparing the speeds, the 5G chip delivers up to 2.3Gbps download and 1.25Gbps upload speed. Moving further, the Kirin 810 offers up to 1.4Gbps download and 200Mpbs upload speeds, while, standard 990 speeds not yet disclosed. Other essential connectivity features are available on all SoCs. The Kirin 990 series arrives with the latest SuperCharge 3.0 fast charging, which the Kirin 810 lacks.
Antutu, Geekbench Benchmark Scores
Even though Kirin 990 is a new series, benchmarks scores are barely available. recently, a device with model number NLE-AL00 surfaced on Geekbench with 3,842 points for single-core and 11,644 points for multi-core. It is suspected to be the 4G variant. On the other hands, Kirin 810 scores 2,746 points for single-core and 7,700 points for multi-core results on Geekbench.
In Antutu, the same chip managed to score 2,37,437 points. Definitely, Kirin 990 chipset easily defeats the Kirin 810. But we shouldn’t have any complaints because both are designed for different prospectives.
Conclusion – Which one is better?
The Kirin 990 5G is a definite winner in all aspects. It will be used for the company’s premium portfolio devices, so, they have tried to give their best. The standard Kirin 990 is on the second position followed by the Kirin 810.
