Samsung officially unveils 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX camera sensor

Samsung finally officially announced 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX camera sensor partnered with Chinese firm Xiaomi. According to Samsung newsroom, it uses huge 1/1.33-inch sensor size, that can absorb more light than smaller sensors and its pixel-merging Tetracell technology allows the sensor to imitate big-pixel sensors. Indeed, it is a 27MP camera, which increases pixel count using the pixel binning technology.

Further, it adds smart ISO mechanism with adjustable ISO to provide optimal light according to the environmental conditions to improve pixel saturation and produce vivid photographs. However, It is well capable of recording up to 6k 3384 x 6016p video @30 FPS, but there are few smartphones that can record up to 8K video relatively lower frame rates. The company claims that the resolution given to HMX sensor can match the high-end DSLR camera and they will expend the reach of 0.8μm pixels further to the new 108MP camera sensor.

Xiaomi president,  Lin Bin, added:

For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor. We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones, As we continue our partnership, we anticipate bringing not only new mobile camera experiences but also a platform through which our users can create unique content.

Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics, said:

Samsung is continuously pushing for innovations in pixel and logic technologies to engineer our ISOCELL image sensors to capture the world as close to how our eyes perceive them,” said Yongin Park, executive vice president of sensor business at Samsung Electronics. “Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology.

The company further confirms that mass production of 108MP ISOCELL Bright HMX camera sensor will start from by later this month. Therefore, we can see some smartphones adopting this sensor before the end of this year. The Mi Mix 4 is already speculated to bring 108MP camera, which is expected to launch in September.
